Tennessee Eats

Description

Tennessee might be best known to the outside world for its country music and distilled drinks, Jack Daniel’s for one, but get beyond the label and the savvy lover of both food and beverage will learn that this Southern state has a long list of other specialties worth sucking up to, from Mountain Dew to Moon Pies and Mayfield ice cream, Goo Goo Clusters to Brock’s candy and fried fruit pies.

And it’s not just sweets and whiskey sours in these parts either. Memphis barbecue, most often pork ribs with an herb and spice rub served “wet” or “dry”, is where any gourmet griller’s gut instinct ought point, the stuff of the Memphis’ World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest that kicks off every May followed closely by the Tennessee State BBQ Cookoff Championship held every June in Lawrenceberg, to the east.

Southern food also features prominently on the tables of many a traditional diner (also known as a Meat-and-Three) where hungry customers can wash down a meat dish, three vegetable sides and steaming cornbread with a big glass of sweet tea. Look for fried chicken, baked country ham with red-eye gravy, fried catfish, dumplings and other down home dishes in portions sure to send patrons scurrying off in search of doggy bags. Save some room for desert too, like thick chocolate shakes, strawberry pie or banana pudding. After-lunch nap, anyone?

For those in search of not shut-eye but the perfect Tennessee tipple, fit a long stop at the Jack Daniel’s distillery in Lynchburg and the George Dickel distillery near Tullahoma into the schedule.
